A brief account of the trial of Captain Richard Nelthorp and Colonel John Ayloff for High Treason
My lord,
This day, two more old friends face the tyrants justice, for Captain Richard Nelthorp and Colonel John Ayloff were brought from Newgate to the Kings bench and bar, where being asked, “What they had to say why execution should not be awarded against them, they standing attainted by Outlawry of High Treason, for considering the Death of late King of ever blessed memory &c?”
Both men had been linked to the Rye House Plot, then Capt. Nelthorp did return with the late Duke, whilst Col. Ayloff had been with Argyll in the Scotch rising. It was for the housing of Capt. Nelthorp that did for poor Lady Lisle, all those months past, since when we have seen so much blood split and still more to come.
So having nothing to say for themselves the Court made a Ruling that they should both be executed on Friday next. Then they these fellow comrades returned to Newgate. So with a heavy heart and weariness of the soul, in my next I shall give some account of their martyrdom.
