Wells, September 22. 1685

An account of the 543 men awaiting this bloody Assize Court of Judge Jeffreys and those Martyred on this day.
My lord,
The Assize court finds over 543 awaiting sentencing in this place. Only one man, William Mangell has pleaded not guilty. The list of those charged here is:
514 for waging war on the King
9 for aiding and assisting the late Duke of Monmouth
6 for speaking seditious words
10 will call on the Kings general Pardon
Poor Mangell was convicted of High Treason in moments and shall hang later today. The rest have been found guilty and 99 will be executed the rest transported. The word is that the King will give 850 men to his friends for sale as slaves into the sugar plantations in the Americas. We expect any day the final list of those named to die from the King.
Today there were more executions in Wareham and will send a separate list of those martyred. The Wells Assize will conclude today or tomorrow, with so great a number pleading ‘guilty’ there has been only the one case put before the jury.
In my next, I shall give you an account of the sentences as given by the tyrant.
William Savage
