Sedgemoor, July 2. 1685
This day as we marched to Pedwell on the great Sedgemoor, the men spirits have lifted a little as the rain has eased, but after such weather the road is hard going, especially for our 30 or so wagon’s. At Pedwell we had been told that we shall meet the grand Clubmen Army of 10,000. Yet only some 200 men greet us on the moor and all are poorly armed with most dressed like beggars. However, these new recruits do replace those that have gone home during our march. The enemy still makes no attempt on our rear, but strong out-guards are stationed all round. The night is extremely dark but the rain has stopped for now, at least. Tomorrow we should reach Bridgwater and look forward to better billets than tonight’s rough shelters.
