We have so many men coming to the colours, that as the sun rose this morning, there are already over 800 already carrying arms for his grace. As I watch the road, more and more are streaming into the town from the whole country. While, the recruits arrive, our stores of powder and shot together with the stacks of musket and pikes are being unloaded at the Cobb. I have sent my old friend John Kidd, now Captain, and once gamekeeper at Longleat, toward Axminster, for we have information that the Devonshire Militia have mustered. My watch is now over the Dorchester road, for the Dorset Militia Troop are reported to be in that place.
As the sun sets, I believe near one thousand and five hundred men have joined our Army today. For Young Dare has told me that the Duke’s Red now has over 500 in the ranks, whilst Holmes has nearly the same, with the White close to 350. To my surprise and joy, even the Yellow Regiment is now being formed. In-addition, we had over one hundred and fifty horse come in already, these are under Colonel Fletcher and Major Manley.
Now as I settle into my watch for the third night, John arrives with word that he has word that Duke of Albemarle and his Militia are near. So, I sent him to his grace with this news. Around midnight, I can hear the drums beating from the town, for Major Wade is marching the Red up to cover the road west, as we fear that the Duke of Albemarle may attempt an attack this night.
